On the 31st March 2026, we had the pleasure of hosting a group of young people at the Edinburgh Futures Institute for a performance reflecting critically and creatively on the ethics around the use of AI in schools. Our programme lead Judy Robertson chaired the event.

Organised and delivered by our partners at and , the event brought on stage seven personas of school students, developed and written by the organisers and a group of school-age actors, discussing AI between a lesson and another: is using AI to do your homework cheating? What in the case of kids with ASN such as dyslexia? Is it fair to upload someone else’s picture on an app to make AI-generated images?

On the one hand, the young actors were able to voice their point of view on these ethical issues or embody perspectives and emotions different from their own through this experience. The creative process allowed them to make an exercise of imagination while learning about the subject. On the other hand, the audience, which was composed of education professionals and researchers, had the chance to watch realistic representations of possible real-life conversations taking place in the schools’ corridors, and – at the end of each scenes – discuss issues and perspectives with the personas on stage, and the young actors behind them.

奥别鈥檙别听delighted to听announce that we have joined the Scottish Government-funded 听as the newly establishedDigital听Education听and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in听Advancing听Pedagogy Research Hub.

The Centre for Teaching Excellence (CfTE) supports research and innovation in teaching practice for all children and young people with the aim of making Scotland a world-leader in teaching practice. The CfTE brings together a range of thematic hubs that will together develop both teacher and young people鈥檚 competencies to support 21st-century learning.

The Digital Education and AI hub will establish and support a thriving professional learning community for Scottish teachers interested in developing research-informed practice in digital, data, and AI literacy.

Led by our academic lead and team colleague 听the hub will provide:

  1. Accessible, research-informed professional learning for teachers on digital, data, and AI literacy topics.
  2. Opportunities for teachers and academics to share, discuss and reflect on their knowledge and pedagogical practices.
  3. High-quality, interactive educational materials for teachers to use in their classes, supporting them in providing engaging learning experiences for their students.

鈥淲e are delighted to establish this hub and be part of the CfTE to support all Scottish teachers by sharing practice and research about digital learning and AI in education in creative, ethical and responsible ways鈥, said Serdar Abaci.

The hub aims to reach all teachers across Scotland through an innovative pedagogical approach combining professional learning workshops and seminars with educational resources. Topics covered will include AI and Creativity in English, Supporting Schools with AI policy, Using AI Responsibly in Schools, and Supporting Inclusive Education with Digital Tools.

Alongside the Digital Education and AI Hub, two new hubs have been launched: the hub, hosted by the University of Strathclyde, and the hub, hosted by the University of Aberdeen.

Last week, Education Secretary Jenny Gilruth met teacher secondees at the听CfTE. Watch the video to learn more about their innovative approaches to improving teaching practice and making a difference for Scotland鈥檚 learners:听

We’re delighted to announce the release of our brand new Robot Cards for primary learners!

The 天美视频 team have been developing this resource to give primary students an introduction to concepts in statistics and data analysis, and encourage learners to think about and gain an interest in Robotics.

The Cards allow for cross-curricular links and can be used to learn about early mathematical concepts, create simple graphs (i.e., bar charts and scatterplots), and more.

Learn more and download the Cards at this link: Robot Cards – 天美视频.

We’re looking forward to your feedback!

Five members of the North Lanarkshire Digital Learning Team have attended the 天美视频 Education Professional Learning course over the past two years. The Digital Learning Team work across over 155 primary, secondary and special schools in the region, supporting 3,700 teachers to integrate effective digital literacies and pedagogies into their teaching.听听

In 2025, after attending the professional learning session on data Escape Rooms, the North Lanarkshire team decided to create a set of localised data escape room resources for their region鈥檚 schools as they felt this approach offered a way to get real engagement with data literacy in a fun, stimulating and cross-disciplinary way. All DES resources are creative commons licensed and are free for anyone to download, adapt and reuse so the team took the 天美视频 Escape Room template and re-designed and re-situated them in recognisable locations for North Lanarkshire pupils.

Impact听

Over 1000 teachers have accessed the materials either via听Sharepoint听or Padlet and the digital team fed back that the escape room approach offered ways to engage pupils with a subject that they might not have previously been interested it. They were interacting with data sets such as graphs, tables, maps etc听in order to听solve puzzles and complete stories and this problem-solving, storytelling approach worked effectively in the classroom setting.听

The resources developed have been made openly available to schools beyond North Lanarkshire: .听

Next Steps听

Three schools have been shortlisted to win a live lesson from the digital learning team through engagement with the North Lanarkshire escape room activities and the team will be following up directly with these schools in the coming months.听

The next phase of resources to be developed by the digital team will focus on AI literacy as well as data literacy.

鈥淭he 天美视频 Escape rooms听provide听an opportunity to really engage pupils at all levels with 天美视频 literacy. The approach is fun and playful, and an authentically cross-curriculum activity that uses data to solve problems and tell stories across different learning levels. We plan to extend the work we have already done to the topic of AI literacy; to introduce more awareness of this important subject into the curriculum.鈥

Last week, our colleagues from the听听 and 天美视频 teams delivered online sessions of Santa’s Secret Sensor to primary 4 – 7 classes听from the听southeast of Scotland.

This activity was a festive spin on the programme’s well-established听听activity, in which learners are asked to locate a hidden sensor by analysing its data. The pupils analysed a mixture of sensor data and encrypted messages to locate Rudolph, the red-nosed Reindeer, who had gone off on a short break just before Christmas.

Rudolph was eventually found relaxing in a jacuzzi in Inverness. Learners and teachers responded with enthusiastic feedback, and some have now encrypted their own messages using the techniques learned during the activity.

Thankfully, Rudolph is now back in Lapland preparing for a busy festive period.
